Mrs. Carol June Hornick

Carol June Hornick, a resident of Willow Springs, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2019 while at Willow Health Care. Born July 27, 1928 to Lou and Felice Altschwager in Milwaukee, WI; she was 90 years old. Carol grew up and attended school in Milwaukee where she graduated from Messmer High School. She was married to Edward Hornick and to this union three children were born. While her children were young, she went back to school at the Milwaukee Area Technical College and obtained her Associate Degree in Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse at a nursing home in Milwaukee. In 1974, the family moved near Salem, Missouri. It became quite a learning experience for Carol and her children to move from the city to a farm. The farm they purchased had cattle, and the family knew nothing about taking care of farm animals; however, they were fortunate to have neighbors to help guide them. At this time, Carol was also employed at Salem Memorial Hospital. She later worked at a nursing home in Mansfield, MO before her retirement. Even though Carol faced many health challenges, she always maintained a positive outlook on life, and was always “there” for her children, who all followed in her footsteps and entered the health care field. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and loved making rosaries with the other women at her church. She also greatly enjoyed volunteering at MUNCH. She was an excellent baker and was known for her cinnamon rolls, but coffee cake was her specialty. It has been said that you were always careful when you ate her meatloaf, because she liked to put “secret ingredients” in it. She enjoyed painting and especially watching her grandkids play sports, but her favorite times were spent cooking a big meal for her family. Even though she suffered from dementia, she still remembered how to pray. She will be greatly missed by her family, her friends, and all who knew her. Mrs. Hornick is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Bob and Louie; and two sisters, Jean and Mary. She is survived by her son, Greg Hornick and his wife, Penny of North Carolina; her son, John Hornick and his wife, Leslie of Ashland, MO; and daughter, Barbara Caton and her husband, Steve of Pomona. Further survivors include seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. The Rosary will be recited Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at Willow Funeral Home, LLC at 5:30 P.M. Visitation will follow from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. The Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, March 21, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Sherman Wall officiating. Interment will follow at Mansfield Cemetery in Mansfield, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and may be left at the church or the funeral home.
